Semester mode of teaching and examination in Indian universities has become a national policy. Consequently, the UGC has made it mandatory for all the institutions of higher learning and affiliated colleges in the country to follow this system. Another major recommendation of the national regulatory authorities has been to introduce Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in tune with global trends and adoption of a sound grading system that reflects the learner's performance in the best possible way. The UGC has also been vocal on the need to 'pay urgent attention to curricular flexibility and learner's mobility'. Keeping all this in mind Kohima Science College has decided to introduce the CBCS. We believe this will assuage the constraints of pursuing pre-determined combinations of course to a certain level and offer the students opportunities and avenues to not only learn core subjects but also explore additional avenues of learning beyond the core subjects for holistic development of the student.

A minimum of six semesters (three years) and maximum ten semesters (five years) will be required for the successful completion of the course. The odd semesters (I, III, & V) shall be from July 1 to December 31. The even semesters (II, IV, & VI) shall be from January 1 to June 30. Each semester shall have class tests, internal assessment activities and end semester examinations with a weightage ratio of 30:70. In order to clear a semester the student has to secure a minimum of 40% marks in the internal assessments and 40% in the end semester examinations.

 As per the college norms, a student having less than 80% attendance shall not be allowed to appear end semester examinations.

XII passed or equivalent from a recognized Board with a minimum of 50% in aggregate (condition not applicable for students of Kohima Science College) and with the following conditions if an applicant wishes to take up Honours subject:

a)   45% in the subject in which one desires to take up Honours.

b)   45% in Biology to take up Honours in Botany or Zoology.

c)   45% in the aggregate to take up honours in a subject not available at the + 2 or equivalent level.

Master of Science is a two year programme spread over four semesters which leads to the degree of M.Sc.

This level of study was introduced to fill the acute need of the society to have a wider avenue for such students who would like to pursue higher studies in science here in Nagaland. The curricula are tailored, and proactively updated, along the patterns followed by top universities of the country. The syllabi will not only expose the students to the latest trends but will also introduce them to the functional areas in their respective discipline with a considered blend of theory and practice. The programme will prepare the students for further research and any other relevant activity in their respective field of study.

Eligibility

Any Student having 45% marks in B.Sc. honours or 60% aggregate in B.Sc. general from a recognized university/institution is eligible to apply for the M.Sc. program.

Kohima Science College has introduced Ph.D. program in Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Chemistry and Zoology. The college follows the updated University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016. The salient features for the Ph. D program in the college are as follows

• The minimum qualification for Ph. D. course admission is Master's Degree or a Professional Degree declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding statutory / regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed).

• Ph.D. students are admitted through an Entrance Test and Viva-Voce, with qualifying marks as 50%.. The college may exempt those who have qualified the UGC/UGC-CSIR NET with JRF, GATE/M.Phil, from appearing the entrance test, but all candidates shall appear for viva-voce. The syllabus of the Entrance Test consist of 50% research methodology and 50% of subject-specific.

• All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. program are required to complete the Ph.D. course work prescribed by the Department during the initial semester. Upon satisfactory completion of course work, the Ph.D. Scholar is required to undertake research work and produce a draft thesis within a stipulated time.

• There is a Research Advisory Committee, for each Ph.D. scholar, which is constituted within six months from the date of registration. The Research Supervisor of the scholar is the Convener of this Committee. This Committee comprise of five (5) members including the Supervisor.

• A detailed research proposal including the topic, scope of its study, tentative hypothesis, research methodology including sampling and design, is presented before the Research Advisory committee within six months after the completion of the coursework

• A Research Scholar appear before the Research Advisory Committee twice a year (every six months) after the course work and make a presentation of the progress of his/her work for evaluation and further guidance.

• Ph.D. Scholar must published, after his/her admission, at least one (1) research paper (or have paper accepted) in refereed journals preferably indexed in UGC listed journals/SCOPUS/Science Direct/SCI/Web of Sciences and made two paper presentations in conferences/seminars before the submission of the thesis for adjudication.

• A Ph. D. scholar must submit his or her theses within six years but not before three years after the date of admission. Prior to the submission of the thesis, a Research Scholar make a presentation in the Department before the Evaluation Committee. The Ph.D. thesis undergo a Plagiarism check by an anti Plagiarism software recommended by the College from time to time.

• The Ph.D. thesis is submitted within six months from the date of Pre-Submission Seminar, but not earlier than two months.

• A thesis is accepted for the award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy on the unanimous recommendation of the examiners. Thereafter, based on the Viva-Voce examination report, the Controller of Examinations declare the result after due approval of the Chairman, Academic Council.
