Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, which was established in 1961 prior to the attainment of statehood, today commemorated 50 years of existence while saluting the struggles made by its pioneers in building the institution of excellence and celebrating the achievements of producing thousands of educationists, doctors, engineers, technocrats, teachers and many others in different professions.
Addressing the Golden Jubilee Celebration held at the College Auditorium this morning, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio voiced respect and gratitude to the pioneers who had made sacrifices, particularly the faculty and staff who had come to this part of the world during those troubled days. He also expressed pride in Kohima Science College for producing so many leaders in various professions.
The CM was also happy with the pass percentage of the college that stands at 87-88% but impressed upon the students that ‘whatever discipline, whatever subject you take, you have to give 100% commitment because good is not good enough today. You have to excel’.
With 53 colleges in the State - 14 government and 39 private, he said the enrolment of students stands at 29105 while 1600 students are enrolled outside the State (new enrolment). However, noting that the enrolment ratio of higher education is only 12% in Nagaland as against the national average of 14%, he asserted that we have to go back to the primary, rural villages to wake up our children to study hard and come up.
“Thus far we have come; we are happy but there is much more work to be done,” he added.
On this, Rio stressed that our responsibility is to bring people forward in education and not only to get literacy rate. Education, he emphasised, is the foundation and the basis of uplifting progress and economy of the society. Impressing that the government of the day cannot handle this alone, he said every citizen has to perform. “Education is something you get and cannot lose, education is so important for us,” he underlined.
Meanwhile, on the delay of scholarships, the Chief Minister extended his apologies for the inconveniences but stated that it takes time for new systems to pick up while referring to the scholarships being deposited to students’ bank accounts. He also reiterated that the policy was introduced to encourage students and youth to deal with banks. “We want our society to develop the bank culture and build trust and relationship,” he said while maintaining that we have to update and upgrade ourselves into the system.”
He disclosed that a total number of 33654 scholarships have so far been disbursed while 10,131 students are yet to receive. In this regard, he appealed the Department of Higher Education to look into the matter so that it reaches the students at the earliest.
On the motto of Kohima Science College, which is ‘Omnia Vincit Labor’ meaning ‘Labour Overcomes Everything’, Rio said it stands valid despite the changing times and asserted that this should be the guiding principle for everybody.
The Chief Minister also touched on the need for unity and harmony amongst the Naga society. Citing the construction of the magnificent State CM’s official residence in less than 9 months, a result of collective contributions from various sections of the society, he said, “The significance of this instance is that if we can come together, we can achieve anything”. He added, “If we unite, we can have permanent peace in our land.”
Chief Minister Rio reminded Naga brethrens to uphold the regional character, but to have a national outlook to excel and to act globally. He also urged the faculty and students of Kohima Science College to give their best and continue to be the pride of Nagaland.
Minister for Higher Education and Urban Development DrShürhozelie informed that the State Government has been trying to make Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung and Kohima Science College Constituent Colleges with the objective to introduce Research Study as the fundamental goal, under which, the colleges would still function under Nagaland University but would be 100% financed by UGC. However, he lamented that the NU did not show any interest while pointing out that the matter has been pending for the last three years. But the Minister said that they are taking up the matter with the new VC.
Shürhozelie said education is the foundation for all aspects of Human Resource while pointing out that it is more of a capital investment and development. Stressing that education system needs continuous updating, he also expressed hope that with the type of sincere and dedicated teachers in Kohima Science College they would be able to provide role models for the students.
MLA and Chairman, NVKIB, Dr Nicky Kire spoke on behalf of the Founding Members’ families while KruroviPeseyie spoke on behalf of Jotsoma Villagers Land Donors. Memoirs were shared by Kiremwati, Former Principal, DrNiuWhisoKuotsu, former teacher and RenthungoJungio, President of the Alumni Association respectively.
The celebration was marked by the Code of Honour by the NCC Army Wing, unfurling of College Flag, unveiling of Jubilee Monument to the singing of the college anthem by Hill Top Choral, release of 50 balloons and burial of Time Capsule, Dance of Life by the English Department, folk music by the Jotsoma Village Youth, Amazing Grace by ArepChangkija and several other festivities.

50th Freshers Day on 30th July 2011
Minister for School Education & SCERT, Shri. NyiewangKonyak stated that students of today have great responsibility while impressing that every student should not only aim for an academic career but also study the present problems prevailing in Nagaland.
Addressing the 50th Freshers’ Day Celebration of Kohima Science College Jotsoma at the College Auditorium on 30th July 2011, he expressed concern over the prevailing unhealthy situation.
“We have political problem, socio-economic problem, immoral activities, cheating and stealing, deceiving and killing, dishonesty, self love and corruption of high proportions which have penetrated even into the far flung villages in our land and much more.”
He also termed it as shameful that we are not even ashamed of ourselves, but however stated conviction that our land can be healed. He described the students as the new young and dynamic generation who have been experiencing all that is happening around us. To rebuild the society, he said, “I see in you, strength, conviction, commitment and determination”.
Reasoning that they cannot change every individual, he however said that they can contribute their knowledge and wisdom to fight the evils prevailing in our land today.
Further stating that it is high time students also study the Naga history thoroughly from its root ‘because we have lost many of our good culture and tradition’, he asserted that “we will not achieve anything by talking about good things of the past unless we bring about a change in our society”.
That change, he said, can be brought about by the youth as they are the future of the society.
President of the Naga Students Federation, Shri. KelhouneizoYhome also exhorted the gathering and said, “We have come to a stage where a lot of responsibilities, activities and issues have been shouldered upon our shoulders”. He asserted that it is time for students to stand firm to fight against the evil and corruption taking place in the society.
Stating that NSF is committed to upholding its theme, he further called upon the students to join hands together while pointing out that the Naga society has been divided into pieces.
